Introduction
The LIU Post Master of Science program in Corporate Learning and Development is unique in many respects. It is the first program of its kind to combine the science of instructional design with an in-depth study and application of professional skills development. Such knowledge is increasingly sought by organizations trying to become distinct and gain a competitive advantage. This one-year, 30-credit blended program is built with the working professional in mind. Graduates of this program will be able to pursue rewarding careers in the rapidly growing learning and development/corporate training field in the corporate, non-profit and public sectors.
About the Program
Professional skills development, instructional design and training are valued in virtually every organization in the world. Organizations large and small have historically invested significant capital in training employees as a way to improve staff performance and motivation, gain competitive advantage, and/or comply with professional and governmental regulations. Especially in demand are instructional designers who also possess the interpersonal skillsnecessary to be able to advise and consult with corporate leaders in order to reach the best solution given the particular organization’s needs and priorities. Building trusting relationships with clients normally happens over time in a natural way. But competitive pressures have forced organizations to explore ways to accelerate that process, which has in turn given rise to a whole new industry: Professional Skills Development.
The Master of Science in Corporate Learning and Development combines rigorous preparation in both Instructional Design and Professional Skills Development. In addition to the traditional skills required to enter the training (instructional design and development) profession, the program will provide its graduates with a 12-credit Professional Skills Certificate. In addition, students in the program will become competent in knowledge services – learning how information is used and organized in large organizations. Equipping program graduates with all these skills will give them a competitive advantage in the job market because not only will they be more effective designers, but they will also know how to accelerate professional skills development and promote more efficient use of knowledge within their respective organizations.
As indicated above, the need for organizations to train their staff in technical and professional skills has grown tremendously during the last decade, so learning jobs are plentiful and growing, whether in the corporate sector, the military and other government agencies, hospitals and other non-profit organizations. Graduates in this interdisciplinary program will gain the knowledge, the technical, and the professional competency and skills necessary to be successful in organizations needing trainers, instructional designers, facilitators/coachers, and learning and professional skills consultants.
