Teaching Methods

To prepare you for the classroom environment, your coursework will emphasize effective teaching techniques, innovative lesson planning, motivation strategies, and student assessment. Your education classes will examine ways that you can use your knowledge to teach Spanish effectively to young students and to maximize learning outcomes. You will learn how to understand the intellectual, physical and emotional development of teenagers; encourage peer cooperation and collaboration; foster self-esteem and moral development; and to empower parents. You also will explore issues of race, ethnicity and gender in Spanish education for the general adolescence population and at-risk students. You will learn how to assist a young person in overcoming his or her struggles with the Spanish language and to also fully nurture and cultivate those who understand concepts quickly. LIU Post teacher education students enjoy close personal contact with faculty who are dedicated to mentoring the next generation of highly skilled teachers.

Spanish Concentration

As a Spanish education major, you will explore the vast riches of Spanish language and culture. From introductory readings that stress vocabulary building, oral expression and comprehension you will advance to in-depth studies of great Spanish and Spanish-American novelists, playwrights and poets, like Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral. You will analyze the salient features of the national character and examine the importance of regional differences in such areas as folklore, art and political thought. You will study the evolution of Spanish civilization through the ages and its impact on the Americas and other cultures around the world. You will learn ways to communicate to young students fundamental concepts of reading, writing, listening and speaking in Spanish.

Accelerated Degree Program

The 153-credit accelerated degree program awards the Bachelor of Science in Adolescence Education in Spanish and the Master of Arts in Spanish in only five years, a full year less than if the two degrees were pursued separately. Successful completion of a comprehensive examination is required for this program. After you successfully complete the degree requirements and pass all licensure tests (LAST, ATS-W and CSTs) and other state requirements, the New York State Education Department will award you Initial Teaching Certification to teach Spanish to grades 7 to 12.
