The Palmer School is one of the most distinguished schools of library and information science in the country. With four program locations throughout the New York metropolitan area, the Palmer School offers a broad portfolio of degree and advanced certificate programs taught by a faculty of distinguished scholars, researchers and hands-on practitioners. We prepare you for careers in a world transformed by the Internet and help you to reach beyond what is known to skillfully harness the way information is preserved, valued and delivered to every facet of society.
Our Programs
At the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, in Brookville, New York, you can earn a Master of Science in Library and Information Science – accredited by the American Library Association – with specializations in School Library Media, Public Librarianship, Rare Books and Special Collections or Academic and Special Librarianship. The same program is available at New York University’s Bobst Library on Washington Square in Manhattan. In addition, C.W. Post partners with NYU to provide a unique Dual Degree program for scholar-librarians, leading to both a Master of Arts and an Master of Science in Library and Information Science. Students can also take master's level courses at Long Island University’s campuses in Westchester County and in Brentwood, Long Island. Students who already hold a master’s degree can pursue certificates of advanced studies in Archives and Records Management and Public Library Administration.
Flexible Courses and Online Learning
School staff and faculty advisors provide full support for students at every stage of their education, helping them create flexible schedules that fit with their jobs and other demands on their time. Courses are taught in the evenings and on weekends; one innovative option is a master’s degree program in a “blended” format, with a mix of online courses and face-to-face instruction.
Internships and Field Experience
Drawing on the Palmer School’s unsurpassed reputation, master’s students are placed in internships in highly regarded local and state public library and school systems, as well as the most prestigious libraries and archival facilities around the world, including the American Library in Paris, France, the Federal Reserve Bank, Yale University and Yellowstone Research Library. Our alumni are leaders in public libraries, school districts, corporations and organizations and are among the highest paid librarians and information specialists in the country.
Doctoral Program
On the doctoral level, the Palmer School offers the Doctor of Philosophy in Information Studies (Ph.D.), the only program of its kind in the area, which prepares individuals to assume positions as researchers, professors, chief information officers and senior executives wherever information is the currency of progress.
Our Faculty
Palmer School faculty members, dedicated to the creation of new ways to manage the information revolution, serve as consultants to some of the nation’s largest library and archival systems, including the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Their cutting-edge expertise extends to such areas as digital libraries, social networking, Internet research methods, image retrieval, knowledge management, rare books preservation, human-computer interaction, and information storage technologies.
