Submitting an Application for Admission
Applications to the Ph.D. in Information Studies at LIU Post are accepted for the fall semester only. All application materials must be received by March 1 deadline, including transcripts, letters of recommendation, personal statement, statement of research/inquiry, writing sample, curriculum vitae/resume and non-refundable application fee. All requested materials should be submitted to the Graduate Admissions Office. The Ph.D. Program does not accept applications for the Spring semester admission.
1. Required Admissions Application
Applicants to the Ph.D. Program must complete the Long Island University Online Application for Admission.
The application can be obtained by clicking on the above link or selecting the Apply Now button in the upper right-hand corner of this page.
- For the field “Campus,” select “LIU Post”
- For the field “Admit Type,” select “Graduate” or “International Graduate” as appropriate
- For the field “Admit Term,” select “Fall 2013”
- For the field “I’ll be applying as,” select “full time” or “part-time” (full-time is 9 or more credits; part-time is fewer than 9 credits)
- For the field “Intended major,” select “Information Studies PhD”
2. Application Fee
Mail a non-refundable application fee of $40 by either check or money order (made payable to Long Island University) or contact the Bursar to submit fee via credit card. Please write your name on the check or money order, if that is your preferred method of payment. International applicants must pay the fee in U.S. dollars by sending an international money order or check. You can also pay by credit card by printing the Credit Card Authorization form on the Bursar website or by calling 516-299-2323. Cash, international postal money orders or Eurochecks are not accepted.
Request one official copy of your undergraduate and graduate transcript(s) from any college(s) you have attended. You may have them sent directly to the Graduate Admissions Office at LIU Post, or you may wish to have them sent to you. In that case, you should submit the transcripts in the original sealed envelope as part of your application packet. Photocopies or student copies are not considered official. International students should refer to the International Admissions website for transcript requirements.
4. Letters of Recommendation
Three letters of recommendation are required from three separate individuals who can speak to your ability to succeed in a rigorous doctoral program. The form should be signed by you and mailed to the writer of the Letter of Recommendation along with a stamped envelope addressed to: Graduate Admissions, LIU Post, Admissions Processing Center, P.O. Box 805, Randolph, MA 02368-0805.
5. Personal Statement
Write a statement describing your educational and professional goals and discuss what you hope to gain from doctoral study at LIU Post. The statement should be one to three pages in length and can be submitted in the body of the online application.
6. Statement of Research/Inquiry
Write a statement describing your primary areas of research or inquiry interest. The statement should be at least 500 words in length. Be sure to include your full name and page numbers in the upper-right-hand corner of each additional sheet. For a copy of the Statement of Research/Inquiry form, click here.
7. Writing Sample
Enclose a copy of a publication or a sample of other scholarly writing
8. Curriculum Vitae/Résumé
Submit a curriculum vitae or résumé. This document should include:
- All of the educational institutions you have attended beginning with undergraduate study – giving name of the school, location, dates, major field, and degree conferred.
- All of the full-time jobs you have held, including position title, name of employer and the dates during which you held the positions.
- Honors and grants earned
- Professional organizational memberships and offices held
- Professional presentations, seminars and workshops, including the names and dates of the events
9. International Students – Degree Requirements
International applicants must complete the Long Island University Online Application for Admission (select “International Graduate” in the field “Admit Type” and select “Information Studies PhD” in the field “Intended Major.” Applicants who do not have a master’s degree from a U.S. institution must also submit official score results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The required minimum acceptable TOEFL score is: 100 Internet-based (250 computer based or 600 paper-based) or minimum IELTS score: 7.5. International students whose native language is English, or who have received a degree from an accredited college or university where the only medium of instruction is English, may have the English Language proficiency requirement waived. The waiver is determined on an individual basis following a review of the student’s application.
