B.S. in Adolescence Education: Spanish/M.A. in Spanish
This program leads to the Bachelor of Science in Adolescence Education in Spanish and the Master of Arts in Spanish in five years, a full year less than if the two degrees were pursued separately.
Graduates of the accelerated B.S./M.A. program will be qualified for New York State certification as Spanish teachers in grades 7 to 12.
A joint program of LIU Post’s School of Education and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the B.S. in Adolescence Education in Spanish/M.A. in Spanish draws on the resources of one of the region’s top schools of teacher education and an acclaimed center of liberal arts learning to produce a solid foundation for a rewarding career.
The B.S. in Adolescence Education (Grades 7 to 12) provides an in-depth look into the theory and practice of teaching middle and high school students, using classroom instruction to foster intellectual, social and personal development. You will study the dynamics of group and individual motivations, and learn to develop innovative instruction plans. The program includes supervised practice teaching in actual classrooms at two grade levels (7 to 9 and 10 to 12), allowing you to observe certified teachers and interact with the teenage student population.
The M.A. in Spanish provides a comprehensive overview of Spanish literature and language. In addition to syntax and style, you will cover topics including the culture and civilization of Spain, Spanish America and the Caribbean, and will study the lives and works of the great Spanish writers and poets.
The combined bachelor’s and master’s degree program requires the completion of 153 credits. After you complete the degree requirements and successfully pass all licensure tests (LAST, ATS-W and CSTs), you will be awarded Initial Teaching Certification by the New York State Department of Education to teach Spanish to grades 7 to 12. After three years of professional teaching experience, you will automatically receive Professional Teaching Certification with no additional coursework required.
