Poetry Contest

48th Annual Poetry and Fiction Contest

Deadline:  February 24, 2014 (for receipt)
Awards:  The John and Agnes McCarten Memorial Award: $100 to an undergraduate poet.

Best Poem in the following categories: graduate; faculty/staff; and alumni ($75).

Short fiction award: see details below.

Eligibility:  Any original, previously unpublished poem no longer than 50 lines.

Rules:  NO IDENTIFICATION SHOULD BE PLACED ON THE MANUSCRIPT.

            No more than three poems per entrant.

            All poems, typed one to a page, should be submitted following one of these two methods:

Electronic submission (preferred) to dulcie.stoepker@liu.edu.
Subject line: Poetry Contest Submission.

Placed together in a single envelope. 
On the envelope, write your name, address (both dorm and home), and status at LIU Post (undergraduate, graduate, faculty/staff, or alumnus/alumna). Bring the envelope to the Poetry Contest Box in the English Department on the second floor of Humanities Hall, or mail to:

Winners will be notified by mail. Others will be notified of the winners if they include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. An award may be withheld in a category if the judges determine none of the submitted poems are deserving of a prize. No entries will be returned, nor their receipt acknowledged.

Short Fiction Competition

Entries must be original, previously unpublished short stories. Manuscripts must not exceed three pages typed and must be double-spaced in Times New Roman, 12pt. Prize will be $50.

The 48th annual Poetry Awards Night will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2014. Maria Gillam and Laura Boss will read their poems and present the awards. The winning poems will be printed in the evening’s program and winners will read their poems.
