Alka Gupta,Assistant Director of Public Relations
Long Island University
Brooklyn, N.Y. – Soenke Biermann
, director of LIU Global's Australia Program, will be honored by the Australian government for his outstanding contributions to student learning.
Nominated by Australia’s Southern Cross University, where he teaches cultural studies, Professor Biermann will be among faculty from 38 universities in Australia to be honored during an award ceremony Oct. 9. His research interests focus on critical pedagogy, social justice and human rights, and engagement with indigenous philosophies. He has been awarded a number of other institutional and national teaching awards for both his classroom teaching and his extracurricular work.
“I feel very humbled and honored to receive this prestigious award,” said the professor who is originally from northern Germany, but has lived, studied and worked near Byron Bay on the east coast of Australia for the past decade.
“In today's world, the critical pedagogical work done in the humanities is more important than ever in order to help students become independent critical thinkers, self-reflective and empathetic collaborators, as well as active and ethical global citizens,” he said.
“This is an impressive honor and a testament to Soenke’s quality and dedication as a teacher,” said LIU Global Acting Dean Kathleen Modrowski.
As director of LIU Global in Australia, Professor Biermann oversees a program that has been in existence for 16 years. Forming part of LIU Global's four-year degree in Global Studies, the Australia Program explores the dynamic relationships between people and their environments from multiple disciplinary perspectives. Through seminars, excursions, field trips, an Aboriginal bush camp and independent travel, students learn about indigenous peoples and philosophies, natural and cultural history, ecological diversity, environmental sustainability, the various social and cultural contexts of Australia and the crucial relationship between social justice and environmental justice.
