SophomoreSophomore students may study with the India Center or the Comparative Religion and Culture Program. India Center builds on the first-year program and incorporates greater opportunities for independent study. Students take a two-semester sequence in theory and method of cultural study, a two-semester sequence linking area studies to global issues in the Indian context, a writing course, language study, and electives. Three weeks are spent on field trips and students may devote up to ten weeks and eleven credits to independent study.

The Comparative Religion and Culture Program, traveling to Taiwan, Thailand, India, and Turkey over the course of the academic year, offers a set curriculum required of all students. Students take a two-semester sequence in the theory and method of comparison, while the remainder of the courses combines area studies with global studies with a focus on religion. The curriculum includes weekly site visits, field trips, and three weeks devoted to independent study.
