Expert on Mental Health Counseling Profession to Talk at Rockland Graduate Campus of Long Island University

Hudson Graduate Center at Rockland,
Long Island University

Judy Ritterman, executive director of the New York State Mental Health Counseling Association (NYMHCA), will be a guest speaker at the Rockland Graduate Campus of Long Island University on Saturday, March 24, 2007 at 10 a.m. Ritterman will discuss the role of licensed Mental Health Counselors in New York State, the positive outlook for careers in Mental Health Counseling and legislative efforts for third party reimbursement.

Her efforts on behalf of mental health counselors in the state and her diligence in lobbying while head of the NYMHCA, resulted in the passage in 2002 of New York State legislation for the licensing of mental health counselors. She is currently in private practice in Holbrook, New York.

Ritterman's talk will cover such areas as the status of MHC third party reimbursement and the job opportunities for mental health counselors. She will describe how mental health counselors play a key role in providing counseling services in the community.

Beginning in 2005, NYMHCA's Governmental Relations Committee has been contacting all of the insurance companies that conduct business in New York, alerting them to the licensure of mental health counselors and requesting that they begin to accept mental health counselors on their panels and as eligible for insurance reimbursement for their counseling services.

All licensed mental health counselors are considered qualified health care professionals who can work in any mental health settings such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, community mental health centers, and/or private practice and receive insurance reimbursement for their services.

The discussion is free and is open to the public and anyone interested in a mental health counseling career. No pre-registration is necessary.

The Rockland Graduate Campus is located at 70 Route 340 in Orangeburg, NY. It is a half-mile from Route 303 and can be reached from Exit 5N off the Palisades Parkway. For admissions information call (845) 359-7200, ext. 5403 or visit
