New York State teachers, administrators and pupil personnel service providers are required to hold a New York State certificate in order to be employed in the State's public schools. The certificates issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) certify that an individual has met required degree, coursework, assessment and experience requirements. The Rockland Graduate Campus of Long Island University will hold a free workshop and presentation on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on its Orangeburg Campus. There also will be a Graduate Open House held on the same day, from 5:30-8 p.m., for anyone interested in exploring one of the 13 graduate degree programs offered at the Rockland Graduate Campus.
Certificates are issued in a number of titles in three major categories: classroom teaching, administrative and supervisory, and pupil personnel service. At this workshop, attendees will learn the difference between the Initial Certificate and Professional Certificate for teachers. The workshop also will cover NYSED requirements for certification, information on how to obtain additional teaching certificates from the NYSED and an overview of the job market. The presentation will be given by Dr. Michael Hogan, associate dean and certification officer in the School of Education .
