Orangeburg, N.Y. - The Quinceañera ceremony in Hispanic culture is the celebration that marks a teenager’s 15th birthday as a transition to adulthood. For the fourth consecutive year, student members of the Counseling Honor Society at LIU Hudson in Rockland have helped teenagers to celebrate this holiday, and attend their high school proms, in style.
This year more than 90 gowns, in addition to dresses, handbags, shoes and other accessories were collected in the drive. These gowns will help teens who might otherwise not be able to attend their high school proms or celebrate their 15th birthdays in fashionable attire.
Working with the Salvation Army in Rockland, LIU Hudson graduate students, along with local community members, were able to collect a substantial number of dresses and accessories in one month. Donations were made to the Salvation Army and Suffern Temple Corps in Spring Valley, which will post announcements in English and Spanish advertising these fancy goods to interested teens in the community who are looking for items ranging from merely stylish to luxurious to add sparkle to their events.
"I’m proud of our students in the Counseling Honor Society for their thoughtful efforts. The gowns and accessories that have been collected will – for many girls - make Quinceañera, and their high school proms, celebrations to be remembered," said Dr. Sylvia Blake, dean and chief operating officer of LIU Hudson at Rockland and Westchester.
