Janet Simon is the Director of Special Education and Middle Childhood/Adolescence Education, and Professor of Education. She began her teaching career as a special educator in the Cincinnati Public Schools, teaching students with learning and behavior problems.  After completing a doctoral program at the University of Cincinnati, she served as a special education faculty member at Northern Kentucky University, where she learned to appreciate bluegrass and mint juleps and became a genuine Kentucky Colonel.  In 1987, she and her family moved back to the New York area, where she regained her New York accent and her love for the NY Yankees. She became a faculty member at Manhattanville College and later served as the first Dean of the School of Education and Director of  Curriculum and Program Development.  In 1997, she received the Manhattanville College Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Award.

During her career as a teacher educator, Dr. Simon has taught courses on a broad range of general and special education topics and has supervised hundreds of preservice and inservice teachers in a variety of school settings.  She has researched such topics as the language skills of students with learning disabilities, collaboration in school settings, and transition from school-to-work, and has published and presented her findings at national and international conferences.   She has held leadership positions in several local educational organizations (e.g. Chapter 615 of the Council for Exceptional Children, Advisory Board of the Purchase College Partnership, College Consortium of Westchester). In 2010, she was the recipient of the New York State Council for Exceptional Children Leadership Award in recognition of her many years of service to CEC.
