Plan of Study

M.S.Ed. in Special Education and Middle Childhood and Adolescence Education:

ENGLISH (Grades 5-12)

Prerequisites: TED 575 Lives of Adolescents or Equivalent

A Major or its equivalent in English

Tier I: Core Courses (9 credits)

Portfolio Requirements

Initial portfolios should be submitted after 12-15 credits. A student must have a passing first portfolio submission in order to apply for student teaching.

Final portfolios should be submitted one semester prior to the final semester in the program. Portfolios need to be judged as satisfactory or better before the degree will be granted.

Prerequisite Major or its equivalent in math, including 6 credits in calculus

6 credits each in English, social studies and science

One course in a language other than English

Students must pass the Liberal Arts and Science Test (LAST) and Content Specialty Test (CST) in Math to receive certification. Ideally, this will happen early on in their program.

In order to become certified, students should pass the (ATS-W) and the Content Specialty Test (CST) in Students with Disabilities. Ideally, this should happen before the student or supervised teaching experience. When the Multi-Subject Content Specialty Test (Secondary) becomes available, students must also pass it in order to become certified.

Prerequisites: TED 575 "Lives of Adolescents"

A major or its equivalent in one of the social studies, including coursework in economics and government and at least 21 semester hours in the history and geography of the U.S. and the world.
