M.S. in Ed. in Special Education (Gr. 1 – 6) and Literacy (Birth – 6)
The 46-credit M.S. in Ed. in Childhood Special Education and Literacy is for students with prior certification in childhood education who are seeking to extend their scope of knowledge and expertise in the field of Special Education. It leads to a Master of Science degree and eligibility for initial NYS Certification in both Students with Disabilities (Gr. 1 – 6) and Literacy (birth - 6). It prepares students to teach in inclusive or self-contained special education classrooms and resource rooms at the elementary school level. It also prepares students to function as literacy specialists in early childhood and elementary classrooms.
Students graduating from this program are eligible for teaching certification once they have passed all required portions of the New York State Teacher Certification Exam (NYSTCE). Students may also apply for Internship Certification in childhood education or literacy after completing the first 23 credits. Internship Certification permits students to begin teaching while they complete their degrees.
