Short Biography


I am a 'Pharmaceutical Material Scientist' and my laboratory is investigating the impact of the physico-mechanical properties of the pharmaceutical materials using our developed DM3 approach on the final pharmaceutical dosage form performance during powder flow, mixing, compaction, and physical stability. DM3 approach includes understanding interplay of the molecular and macroscopic properties of materials (M1) and crtical manufacturing parameters (M2) using design of experiments (D) and multivariate analysis (M3). This is important in relation with 'Process Analytical Technology' (PAT) and 'Quality by Design' (QbD) paradigm issued by US FDA. The molecular level understanding includes application of advanced analytical techniques like powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, themogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, near infrared spectroscopy and molecular and crystallographic modeling.

I am currently applying this approach to the following broader category research areas:
a) Structure-mechanics relationship of flufenamic acid polymorphs
b) Stability issues of coprocessed excipients
c) Molecular mechanism of Promethazine HCl taste masking with Eudragit® E 100
d) Lubrication efficiency and thermal behavior of the magnesium stearate
e) Superdisintegration mechanism of the crosscarmellose sodium (Ac-Di-Sol®) and sodium starch glycolate (Glycolys®)
f) Compaction properties of modified and pregelatinized starches
g) Roller compaction properties of high functionality excipients

Research Synopsis

My pharmaceutical material science laboratory investigates the impact of physico-mechanical properties of drug formulation components on the performance of the final pharmaceutical dosage form.  Our published “DM3” approach combines an understanding, evaluation, and prediction of the interplay of molecular and macroscopic properties of materials (M1) and manufacturing parameters (M2) on the final dosage form performance, using design of experiments (D) and advanced statistical techniques such as multivariate analysis (M3).
