Q&A With LIU Brentwood Students

Find Out Why We Love It Here

Michael PhilipsMichael Phillips
Vice President, Chi Sigma Iota (Academic and Professional Honor Society of Counseling) - M.S. in Mental Health Counseling, Class of 2014

1. Why did you choose LIU Brentwood?

When I was looking at programs, I called LIU Brentwood to get some information on classes and instantly was connected to a person and not an automated message or voicemail.  The different people I spoke with were friendly, knowledgeable and inviting.  I attended an open house the next day and found that everyone was the same in person as they were on the phone.

2. What do you like most about LIU Brentwood?  What do you like most about your major?

I really like the fact that it's a smaller campus and core group of students, faculty and staff.  Everyone knows each other.  I love my major because I not only learn the information and get the opportunity to put the knowledge into practice, but I get to learn about and better myself in the process.

3. What are your career aspirations?

I picked clinical mental health counseling because I've always loved helping others.  I'd like to do general counseling with specialties in stress/anxiety, anger management and substance abuse.

4. How do you feel about LIU Brentwood's exciting new move to Suffolk County Community College's Grant Campus?

I'm enthusiastic about it.  I think it will be a great move and I look forward to being able to use all the new facilities.

Ali PrietoAli Prieto - M.S. in School Counseling, Class of 2014

1. Why did you choose LIU Brentwood?

I chose LIU Brentwood because I wanted a school with small class sizes and a low student-teacher ratio. I also chose LIU Brentwood because I wanted a school close in location to my house. This school also had great scholarship opportunities that I was eligible for which was unlike any other grad school I had looked into.

2. What do you like most about LIU Brentwood? What do you like most about your major?

What I enjoy most about LIU Brentwood are the small class sizes. You have an opportunity to ask questions and pose discussions rather than feel lost in a sea of students.  I really enjoy the interactive classroom setting that LIU Brentwood creates. The faculty are all welcoming and go out of their way to help you with not only classroom questions, but anything outside of the classroom that you may need. You’re a person at this school, not just another graduate student attending the university.

What I like most about my major would be the hands on experience that starts on day one. This program is designed for you to jump into the counseling world and begin working with a client during your first semester. At first it's scary and overwhelming but it's such a great experience to start right away instead of sitting in a classroom and listening to a lecture. You’re out in the field beginning your counseling career at the start of this program.

3. What are your career aspirations?

My career aspirations include working in a school setting and being a proactive member to students. I would like to be the person they confide in and go to for any situation or conflict that they may need help dealing with.

4. How do you feel about LIU Brentwood's exciting new move to Suffolk County Community College's Grant Campus?

I am very excited to move to Suffolk County Community College's Grant Campus. I feel that by moving to this new location it will create a new grad school experience for LIU Brentwood students.  I believe that this move will add a real campus life and feeling to LIU Brentwood.

1. Why did you choose LIU Brentwood?

I chose LIU Brentwood because it is a small campus at a convenient location! The administration, faculty, and staff are all personable and really get to know the students. LIU Brentwood has that 'home' feeling - everyone knows everyone around here!

2. What do you like most about LIU Brentwood? What do you like most about your major?

I really enjoy how personable the professors are. They have an interest in your life and where you want to end up in your career. I am currently in the School Counselor master’s program. The best part about my major is the small class sizes, the one-on-one attention I get from professors and the real life scenarios my professors can provide from their personal experience in the field.

3. What are your career aspirations?

I aspire to be a high school guidance counselor! Although I have big dreams for myself...who knows, I could see myself in college admissions!

4. How do you feel about LIU Brentwood's exciting new move to Suffolk County Community College's Grant Campus?

I am beyond excited for this move! It is so nice to know that we will have a new and permanent place to call home! An extra bonus is that it is way closer to home for me! Suffolk County Community College's Grant Campus is already extremely welcoming so it will be a smooth transition for LIU Brentwood students.
