Riverhead, N.Y. – LIU Riverhead will mark a milestone on Tuesday, May 10: the conferral of baccalaureate degrees in the first Commencement exercises to include undergraduate as well as graduate students.

Founded in September 2006 as an institution offering master's degrees, LIU Riverhead launched its upper-division (junior and senior years) undergraduate program in childhood education in September 2009. The first cohort of students will receive their bachelor's degrees on May 10.

Commencement will be held at Giorgio's in Baiting Hollow, N.Y. at 6 p.m. With the first baccalaureate graduates comes another first: Long Island University's first valedictorian, Alicia R. Burt of Riverhead.

“Being a student at LIU-Riverhead was a personal and inspiring experience that gave me the opportunity to succeed, not only academically but cognitively as well,” said Burt, who graduated with an Associate in Applied Science degree in general studies from Suffolk County Community College in 2003. Burt also is the grand marshal of Commencement 2011.

Thirteen students will receive Bachelor of Science degrees in childhood education at Commencement.

In the B.S. in childhood education program, students with associate degrees in liberal arts and sciences from Suffolk County Community College experience a seamless transfer process and generous scholarship opportunities. LIU Riverhead is located at the Eastern Campus of SCCC.

“With the conferral of our first bachelor's degrees, our partnership with Suffolk County Community College has come to fruition. This is an historic achievement for both institutions,” said Jennifer Browne, associate provost for LIU Riverhead. “These are the first bachelor's degrees conferred by a private university on the East End in several years, and we look forward to serving the region with high-quality undergraduate and graduate education for many, many years to come.”

Forty-seven students will receive the Master of Science in education, 23 will receive the M.S. in homeland security management and 31 will receive the graduate-level Advanced Certificate in homeland security management.

The Commencement address will be delivered by Maryellen Gamberg, an adjunct professor of education at LIU Riverhead. Dr. David J. Steinberg, president of Long Island University, and Dr. Jeffrey Kane, the University's vice president for academic affairs, will confer the degrees. Dr. Paul Forestell, provost of LIU Riverhead and the University's C.W. Post campus, and Jennifer Browne, associate provost for LIU Riverhead, will preside.
