New York State Regent Roger Tilles to Speak at LIU Riverhead Commencement

New York State Regent Roger Tilles To Speak At LIU Riverhead CommencementRiverhead, N.Y. -- Roger Tilles, a member of the New York State Board of Regents, will deliver the keynote address at the fifth annual commencement exercises for LIU Riverhead on Tuesday, May 8.

LIU Riverhead's Class of 2012 includes 17 bachelor's degree recipients, 78 master's degree recipients and 13 graduate-level Advanced Certificates recipients from across six programs, including childhood education, literacy education, teaching students with disabilities, applied behavior analysis and homeland security management.

This is the second year LIU Riverhead will confer undergraduate degrees. The ceremony will be held at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center at 6 p.m.

"We are honored to have Roger Tilles address our graduates," said Jennifer Browne, associate provost of LIU Riverhead, an entity of Long Island University, one of the largest private university systems in the country. "His commitment to education and Long Island makes him a role model we can all learn from."

Jennifer Marie Wamsley of East Northport, N.Y. is the valedictorian of the class of 2012. The 28-year-old will earn a bachelor's degree in early childhood education.

"My experience at Long Island University at Riverhead was extremely valuable in preparing me for future success," she said. "I have met so many amazing people who have been supportive and helpful along my journey at LIU. My family and I are extremely proud and thankful for the opportunity to graduate as valedictorian from LIU at Riverhead. This honor proves that hard work and dedication can go along way."

Regent Tilles is currently serving his second five-year term as the Regent for the Tenth Judicial District. A well-known and respected advocate for education on Long Island, with a distinguished record of community service and leadership, he was chair and a founding member of the Association for a Better Long Island and past acting chair of the Long Island Regional Planning Board. He also served as chair of the Long Island University Board of Trustees and on the Boards of WNET/Channel 13 and WLIW/Channel 21. He has been executive vice chairman of the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, in addition to serving on the board and executive board of the Long Island Association. He has worked to form the Long Island Arts Alliance, attempting to bring together the cultural institutions of Long Island. Currently a director of Tilles Investment Companies, he holds a B.A. from Amherst College and a jurist doctorate from the University of Michigan College of Law. He is a member of the New York, D.C. and Michigan Bar Associations.

Dr. David J. Steinberg, president of Long Island University, and Dr. Jeffrey Kane, the University's vice president for academic affairs, will confer the degrees. Dr. Paul Forestell, provost of LIU Riverhead , LIU Post and LIU Brentwood, and Jennifer Browne, associate provost for LIU Riverhead, will preside. Dr. Shaun McKay, president of Suffolk County Community College (SCCC), will provide remarks. LIU Riverhead is located on the grounds of the Eastern Campus of Suffolk County Community College, off County Road 51 Riverhead-Moriches Road in Riverhead, New York.
