William J. Bratton, a member of Homeland Security Management Institute’s (HSMI) Board of Advisors, was appointed police commissioner of the New York Police Department by mayor-elect Bill DeBlasio on Dec. 5. Bratton, who served as a HSMI Board of Advisors member since the institute’s inception in 2004, previously served as NYPD commissioner from 1994 to 1996 and led the agency to historic reductions in crime and improvements in the city’s quality of life. He subsequently served as chief of the Los Angeles Police Department where he also achieved substantial reductions in crime and dramatically improved relationships between the police and the community.

HSMI Professor Vincent Henry, CPP, Ph.D., a retired member of NYPD who worked closely with Bratton during his tenure there, said, “We are thrilled that Bill Bratton will again lead the NYPD, and know that both the agency and the people of New York City are safe in the hands of the finest and most experienced police chief in the nation. We are honored that Bill Bratton has been named to this post. Over the years, Bill has been a good and generous friend, colleague, and advisor to the institute, to our students, and to our faculty.”

HSMI's Board of Advisors boasts the most influential names in homeland security and law enforcement. Several members are also among the institute's distinguished faculty of senior fellows, sharing their years of practical experience with students and professional colleagues. In addition to providing networking opportunities for students, the board provides expert advice and makes recommendations concerning the HSMI's curriculum and policies. They often serve as guest lecturers and, as the nation’s leading subject matter experts, they are available to advise students and faculty regarding research and professional best practices.

Among the members of HSMI's Board of Advisors are Congressman Peter King, Congressman Steve Israel, Lieutenant General (ret.) Russel Honore, New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Commissioner Jerome Hauer, New Jersey State Police Superintendent Colonel Rick Fuentes, and former New York State Deputy Secretary for Public Safety Michael Balboni.
