Erica Pecorale is an Assistant Professor of Education and the Director of Education at Long Island University Riverhead. She teaches graduate and undergraduate level courses in Childhood Education and Literacy Education. Prior to joining the LIU faculty in 2006, she worked for 15 years as an Elementary Teacher and Literacy Coach. While working with elementary students, she focused on bringing authentic learning experiences in all academic areas to the children she taught. As a building wide literacy coach, she helped teachers implement best practices using formative and summative assessments to help them plan for differentiated instruction for the diverse needs of their students. Since 2003, Erica has worked as a literacy curricular consultant in over 35 districts throughout New York, Connecticut and Maine. This work has enabled her to she assist school districts in planning for literacy professional development initiatives that empower teachers and students to be critical independent learners of literacy while utilizing diverse resources and texts to understand the world better.
Erica’s doctoral research explored family literacy practices and shifts that are happening in families and schools as society moves towards more digital modes of communication. She has multiple certifications including, Childhood k-6, Math 7-9, Special Education k-12, school district administration and literacy. When she is not teaching, she can be found traveling the world, rock climbing, rafting, or visiting schools and families and learning about literacy practices in their communities.
