On May 25, 2006 the New York State Education Department approved and registered the Master of Science in Homeland Security Management degree – the first and only registered Master's degree in homeland security in New York State and the first fully online graduate degree program to be offered by Long Island University. The Homeland Security and Terrorism Institute (HSTI) began offering the fully online M.S. in Homeland Security Management in the fall of 2006.
This academically rigorous and professionally relevant 30-credit online Master's degree builds upon and expands the 15-credit online Advanced Certificate in Homeland Security Management - an online graduate credential the Institute began offering in September 2005. In March 2012, the New York State Education Department approved the 15-credit on line Advanced Certificate in Cyber Security Policy. Either of the 15 credit Advanced Certificate programs can form the core curriculum of the Master’s degree in Homeland Security Management, permitting qualified students completing an Advanced Certificate to continue their studies and earn both the Advanced Certificate and the Master's degree without any loss of credit.
The HSTI quickly emerged as a leader in graduate-level Homeland Security/Homeland Defense education, achieving broad recognition for the exceptional quality of its online graduate curriculum, for the unrivaled combination of academic credentials and practical professional experience among its faculty, for the superb leadership and ongoing program guidance provided by its renowned Board of Advisors, and for the outstanding professionalism of its highly competent students.
In 2007, in recognition of its capabilities and the outstanding graduate education it provides, the HSTI was designated by an Act of Congress (in the “Implementing the Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission report Act of 2007”) as a US Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence. The HSTI is the only DHS Center of Excellence to offer a graduate degree in the Homeland Security Management field.
All courses are delivered entirely online in an "asynchronous" format that permits busy students from across the nation and around the globe the flexibility they want and need in graduate study.
