03/17 : Art Database, New Materials, and Library Survey
- The newest trial database available for your enjoyment is Art & Architecture Complete which covers periodicals and books on art, archaeology, architecture, photography, printmaking, costume design, interior and landscape design, and more. It includes an image collection of over 64,000 images.
The lists of new books and videos, DVDs, and CDs at the Brentwood Campus library have been updated. If you'd like see lists of the newest books, videos, music, and more added to our collections here at C.W. Post, you can go to the New Library Materials RSS Feeds page. It can be browsed either by subject area (according to Library of Congress classifications) or by library department. You can also sign up for RSS feeds in your areas of interest to have monthly lists of new materials automatically sent to you.

A new trial database is the Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science which covers the collection, organization, storage, preservation, retrieval, transfer, and display of the entire body of materials representing what cultures know and value.
Gray's Anatomy Online is no longer available, but you can get similar information from the Human Body Book: An Illustrated Guide to Its Structure, Function and Disorders, as well as other online reference books for Biology and Health. Of course, we still have the paper version too.

The list of new books at the Brentwood Campus library has been posted. If you'd like see lists of the newest books, videos, music, and more added to our collections here at C.W. On Friday, the first Library Brown Bag event of the semester will present the teleconference, Information Literacy Education: A National Overview, with Lisa Stock, Jean Donham, and Dane Ward. It will provide "a background briefing on the working standards and assessments for national literacy and open a dialog on what librarians can do to strengthen efforts to encourage and build information literacy efforts not only in your own library, but in concert with your colleagues around the country." Librarians, Library Science students, and any interested others are welcome to this program that begins at noon in the Library Instruction Lab. Please RSVP.

Post, Buildings and Grounds has requested that we take campus-related computing services offline while this work is conducted. 03/07 : Online Video, Ed Tech Demo, Library Workshop, Teleconference, and Library Survey
- The trial of the Films on Demand database has been extended. It provides streaming video of more than 6,000 documentaries and dramatic productions that cover the humanities, social sciences, business, sciences, and more.
On Wednesday, the Instructional Media Center, in cooperation with the School of Education, will present the educational technology demonstration, Interactive Learning Using Clickers. It begins at 3:45 downstairs in the IMC.

03/03 : Shea Stadium Lecture, Artists' Reception, Coming Events, and Library Survey
- A series of library brown bag events has been announced for the spring semester. The first will deal with information literacy education and will take place on March 12. Later ones will deal with technology trends in libraries and making the most of our full-text online resources. Everyone is welcome.
On Friday, the Post Library Association will present Dana Brand's lecture, based on his book, The Last Days of Shea: Delight and Despair in the Life of a Mets Fan, in which he focuses on his love for the now-demolished Shea Stadium and his experiences following the Mets' misfortunes since 2006. This book is not just about baseball. It is about family life, community, hope, fun, and suffering. The book has been praised by Mets announcers Gary Cohen, Ron Darling, and Howie Rose, as well as by the great Mets pitcher Jerry Koosman. It has also received recognition in the world of literature where it has been praised by the novelist Jonathan Lethem and the essayist Phillip Lopate. Everyone is welcome to this free event that begins at 8:00 in the library lobby.

There are four new databases from WilsonWeb that we have access to for a brief trial period. Art Museum Image Gallery provides online images of over 155,000 works of art from around the world. Cinema Image Gallery provides contains over 150,000 images and 4,000 posters from movies, television, and the entertainment industry, including rare behind-the-scenes material. Art Full Text enhances our Art Abstracts database with the text of selected journals dating back to 1997. And ERIC is Wilson's version of the education database that provides access to journal articles and other education-related resources.
The Interlibrary Loan Department encourages everyone to make use of the new ILLiad interlibrary loan system instead of the older request forms. ILLiad enables you to create an account so that you won't have to reenter your personal information each time you use it and to keep track of your interlibrary loan requests.

The highlight of the visit will be a guided tour of the exhibit, Traveling the Silk Road: Ancient Pathway to the Modern World. Prepare to embark on a thrilling journey along the greatest trading route in history, the Silk Road, and traverse the ancient cities of Asia and the Middle East as well as ancient Baghdad. This will be followed by Journey to the Stars at the Hayden Planetarium, a stunning voyage through time and space to experience the life and death of the stars in our night sky. Finally, you will be treated to an IMAX film, Mysteries of the Great Lakes. Light refreshments will be available on the bus. If you wish to purchase lunch at the museum, you will have the opportunity to visit the museum food court. The cost is $65 for PLA members and $75 for non-members. Please reserve your place by March 1. Reservation forms are available at the Reference Desk.

02/01 : Civil War Exhibit, Abraham Lincoln Lectures, SmartBoard Demo
- The new exhibit in the back of Reference Commons is Scenes from the Civil War. Prepared by the Library of Congress, it takes a look at the causes, history, battlegrounds, timeline, maps, art, photography, and reporting of this period of American history. As part of the library's celebration of National Black History Month, it is accompanied by the exhibit, The History of Black Economic Empowerment, that examines the organizational and entrepreneurial skills exercised by African Americans after gaining freedom from centuries of slavery.
On Wednesday, Dr. Harold Holzer, a renowned Abraham Lincoln scholar, will present the lecture, Lincoln and Obama: Lessons from the Past, Inspiration for the Future, in the Interfaith Center at 12:30. The lecture is part of a series of Abraham Lincoln events on campus

The exhibit also commemorates the centennial of the National Urban League, an organization that has worked in various ways to bring about educational and employment opportunities to blacks.
The Special Collections Department has posted a holdings list for the Architectural Library of H.T. Lindeberg. This collection contains architectural monographs and some periodicals donated circa 1962 by Mrs. H. T. Lindeberg. New York architect Harrie T. Lindeberg's career, spanning more than forty years, won him great renown for the grand urbane country home. He retired on his estate on Long Island after World War II.

- New among our trial databases are two from the Human Relations Area Files (HRAF) at Yale University. eHRAF World Cultures provides information on all aspects of cultural and social life and is browsable by region, culture, and ethnic group. eHRAF Archaeology covers the world's prehistory and is browsable by archeological tradition, region, and country. Each entry in both is also accompanied by full text articles, books, and dissertations, as well as glossaries.
On Wednesday, the Palmer School of Library and Information Science will hold an open house for their Ph.D. program in Information Studies at 6:30 in the Tilles Center Patrons Lounge.
The list of new books at the Brentwood Campus library has been posted. If you'd like see lists of the newest books, videos, music, and more added to our collections here at C.W. Post, you can go to the New Library Materials RSS Feeds page. It can be browsed either by subject area (according to Library of Congress classifications) or by library department. You can also sign up for RSS feeds in your areas of interest to have monthly lists of new materials automatically sent to you.
There has been a problem with accessing the Westlaw Campus database from
off-campus computers, but it is still available for on-campus use. The LexisNexis legal databases can be used from bothon-campus andoff-campus computers.Next week, there will be several Abraham Lincoln events on campus, beginning on Monday with a new exhibit downstairs in the Hutchins Gallery. Abraham Lincoln: The Great Emancipator and his Legacy is a series of portraits of President Lincoln and works inspired by the Civil Rights movement of the 60s by Dan Christoffel. There will be an artist's reception and talk on Thursday. On Wednesday, in the Interfaith Center, there will be a lecture entitled, Lincoln and Obama: Lessons from the Past, Inspiration for the Future, with Dr. Harold Holzer, a renowned Lincoln scholar.
01/20 : New Exhibit, Database News, Library Workshop
- The new exhibit in the back of Reference Commons showcases the library's William Randolph Hearst Archive, including the history of the collection, preservation and digitization activities, and web-based initiatives, as well as a look of Hearst's spectacular homes, extraordinary purchases, and more.
Section 3 of the library workshop begins on Thursday at 5:45.
Our newest database is Environment Abstracts, which covers all aspects of the impact of people and technology on the environment and the effectiveness of remedial policies and technologies.
In addition to being able to ask a librarian for help in person, over the telephone, through online chat, and email, you can also IM a librarian through your Yahoo! Messenger, Window's Live Messenger, AOL AIM, Astra IM, or Google Talk account. Contact the screen name "cwplibrarian".
The following databases are no longer available: Social Services Abstracts (but you can still access Social Work Abstracts and other social work databases), PILOTS: Published International Literature On Traumatic Stress (but there are still many psychology and health databases), Human Population & Natural Resource Management (but there are still many other environment databases), and LexisNexis Polls and Surveys from the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research (but the other components of LexisNexis provide a great deal of statistical and opinion information, as do our other statistics and demographics databases).

01/13 : Poetry Reading and Library Hours
- The library will be open 9:00-5:00 on Thursday and Friday and closed this weekend. We will be open 9:00-5:00 on Monday. Normal library hours will resume on Tuesday, and the Bookmark Café will reopen then too.
On Wednesday, the Poetry Center will present their first reading of the semester featuring poets Miles Champion and Giorgios Qure Lacroix Retsinas. It begins at 7:30 downstairs in the Hutchins Gallery. Everyone is welcome.
Section 3 of the library workshop begins next Thursday at 5:45.
01/12 : More Online Journals, Mission Statement, and Library Hours
- Just in time for the new semester, our newest database is Sage Premier, which provides access to the full text of 545 peer-reviewed journals in business, humanities, social sciences, science, technology, and medicine. You can also access these journals through our main periodicals search page and through the cross-links that are available in all of the subject databases that we also subscribe to. Going in these ways will also provide you with access to the over 46,000 periodicals that we receive from other vendors as well.
The library's mission statement has been updated.
The Cataloging and Acquisitions Departments are now called the Technical Services Department.
The library will be open 9:00-5:00 on Wednesday through Friday and closed this weekend. We will be open 9:00-5:00 on Monday. Normal library hours will resume on Tuesday, and the Bookmark Café will reopen then too.
01/11 : Video Database, Library Hours, and Coming Events
- A new database that is available for a brief trial period is Films on Demand that provides more than 6,000 streaming educational programs, documentaries, and dramatic productions that cover all subject areas.
Reference Commons and the Circulation Desk will be open 9:00-8:00 on Monday and Tuesday; other departments will be open until 5:00. The entire library will be open 9:00-5:00 on Wednesday - Friday, closed this weekend, and open 9:00-5:00 on Monday. The Bookmark Café will be closed until the Spring semester begins. Normal library hours will resume on Tuesday, January 19.
Coming up in February, there will be several Abraham Lincoln exhibits and events in the library and on campus.
