ASSOCIATE COUNSEL
University Center

Reporting directly to the Vice President for Legal Services and University Counsel for Long Island University, the Associate Counsel will provide legal advice and counseling, focusing on labor and employee relations activities, with heavy emphasis on, but not limited to, union contract negotiations and administration, grievance and arbitration proceedings, and labor and employment related litigation. The Associate Counsel will work closely with the Human Resources department and the Provosts on each University campus.

The job duties will substantially include:

• Lead or assist with the collective bargaining of 16 union contracts.
• Represent the University in connection with employment related litigation and administrative hearings.
• Advise on union grievances.
• Represent the University in labor arbitrations.
• Policy creation and development; assist in implementation.
• Advise and train management employees on a variety of human resource related issues.
• Conduct internal investigations.
• Advise on payroll and benefit tax matters.
• Assist Human Resources with the oversight of workers compensation, unemployment insurance, and disability matters.
• Assist Human Resources in discipline, termination, and contract interpretation.
• Advise and counsel University administrators on practices to avoid or reduce employment related litigation risks.
• Advise and assist with respect to student related claims of discrimination based on protected status and/or failure to provide reasonable accommodation.

Qualifications:

• Juris Doctorate Degree.
• At least five (5) years of collective bargaining experience (preferably as it relates to private sector institutions).
• Admission to practice law in New York State and Federal Courts in New York
• Experience with, and knowledge of, federal and state employment and labor laws and regulations.
• Experience with, and knowledge of, human resource trends, programs, policies, practices and procedures.
• Ability to work independently and proactively with a variety of individuals in a university setting across multiple campuses.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Experience:

• Experience in Higher Education is preferred.
• Experience with PeopleSoft or similar HRIS software preferred.

Chemical Hygiene Officer

• Fulfill role of campus Chemical Hygiene Officer:
o Oversee implementation and management of campus-wide Chemical Hygiene Plan
o Organize chemical safety training
o Work with departments and individual researchers to develop procedures for activities that involve hazardous materials

Assistant Professor of Psychology-Tenure Track Position

The Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program at LIU/CW Post Campus invites applications for a tenure-track position to begin September 2010. Our APA-accredited program leading to the PsyD degree adheres to the practitioner-scholar model. Serve as information and communication manager for the department; organize and maintain paper and elecronic files; manage projects; and disseminate information by using the telephone, mail services and e-mail.

Process department purchase requisitions, invoices, check requests and expense reports.

Develop and maintain accurate payroll records for monthly and bi-weekly employees. Process student payroll and payment requests for game operations staff and officials.

Maintain department personnel database to include adding new hires, terminations, updating information on crurrent employees. Prepare personnel letters and contract requests. Update athletic department's staff directories. Handle and process confidential records, files, and information and phone messages regarding personnel issues, sallaries, and employee and student disciplinary actions.

Qualifications: General secretarial skills and strong computer skills (Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook) to deal with budgets, word processing, and desktop publishing. Good customer service, writing and interpersonal and analytical skills are a requirement. Must be highly organized and posses the ability to work in a team environment and ablel to work independently and efficiently. Must have ability to manage and maintain confidential linformation, database skillss, record keeping and filing, budgeting, ability to handle multiple tasks, problem solving skills, ability to effectively manage projects to meet deadlines. Complelte knowledge of supplies, equipments and services ordering and inventory control. Must have knowledge of and commitment to conduct all activities in compliance with NCAA, LIU and the NEC rules and regulations.
