Dr. Marsha Gordon, President and CEO of The Business Council of Westchester, to Speak at Long Island University's Westchester Graduate Campus Commencement
119 Students to Graduate During May 19, 2009 Ceremony
Purchase, N.Y. – An ardent voice for Westchester County businesses in tough economic times, Dr. Marsha Gordon will be the commencement speaker for the Class of 2009 at Long Island University's Westchester Graduate Campus. The graduating class includes 119 master’s degree candidates in the areas of education, school counseling, school psychology, business administration, marriage and family therapy, mental health counseling, and library and information science.
The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, May 19, at 7 p.m. in the Dance Theater on the grounds of Purchase College of the State University of New York, where the Westchester Graduate Campus is located. Dr. David J. Steinberg, president of Long Island University; Gale Stevens Haynes, Brooklyn Campus provost; and Dr. Sylvia Blake, associate provost and academic dean of the Westchester Graduate Campus also will address graduates, their families members and friends.
"As an enthusiastic advocate for the Westchester County business community, Marsha Gordon is an exemplary role model, whose can-do spirit in these difficult times is an inspiration to our students," declared Dr. Blake. "I am confident that, with the skills and the knowledge they have acquired here, they will go on to make a difference in their own communities as well."
As President/CEO of Westchester County’s largest and fastest-growing business organization, Marsha Gordon brings more than 25 years of community, commerce and leadership experience to The Business Council of Westchester. Since taking the helm in 2001, she and her team have increased the organization’s membership from 500 to nearly 1,200. She also has been credited with forging the intra-membership relationships that have helped many new and established businesses grow.
Prior to joining The Business Council of Westchester, Dr. Gordon was President/CEO of MetroPool, Inc., a nonprofit organization that addresses commuter issues in Fairfield County and the Hudson Valley. From 1991 to 1999, she led the 1,000-member Greater Southern Dutchess Chamber of Commerce, where she inaugurated programs in international trade and workforce development, and attracted a minor-league baseball team to the region. She also has served as membership director for the Eastern Orange County Chamber of Commerce and as director of corporate and professional education for Marist College.
The recipient of numerous professional and community service awards, Dr. Gordon earned a B.A. from Brooklyn College, an M.B.A. from Marist College and a D.B.A. from Pace University.
