English, Philosophy, and Foreign Languages

Department of English, Philosophy, and Foreign Languages

The disciplines in the Department of English, Philosophy, and Foreign Languages encompass several of the central areas of the Humanities. Courses of study in the Humanities focus broadly on understanding and defining cultures and the human experience. By focusing on literature, philosophy or languages, one comes to a better understanding of the past and future, gains greater insight into the world and develops a sense of empathy.

Since Humanities disciplines emphasize skill in writing, reasoning, oral communication, critical reading, and intercultural knowledge, they furnish the foundation for careers in areas such as publishing, teaching, advertising, public relations, foreign diplomacy, human resources and management, law, politics, or government.
