We’ve been placing LIU Hudson graduates in schools throughout the region and across the country for over 30 years and we’ll work with you to begin or advance your career.
LIU Hudson teachers and educational leaders have a formidable history of achievement. They teach in classrooms across the county, the region and the nation. They are the assistant principals and principals who manage our schools and the assistant superintendents and superintendents who set and implement district-wide policies. Despite radical changes in New York State certification requirements for teachers and educational leaders beginning in 2014-2015, our graduates continue to set impressive standards of success as teachers and leaders.
New content specialty tests were designed and implemented in AY 2015-2016. As a result of the resulting disruptions, New York State continues to offer “safety nets” for some tests and offers new safety nets for others. During the period September 2016 through May 2017, LIU Hudson had 35 Initial certification completers and 46 Professional (Advanced) certification completers.
Initial Certification candidates demonstrated their intention to become teachers in NYS by taking varying combinations of 22 different New York State Teacher Certification Examinations. When fewer than 10 students took a given examination, no passing rate was published by the test administrators. Thus, pass rates were reported for only five of the tests and, in every instance but one the LIU Hudson pass rate surpassed the statewide average.
LIU Hudson utilizes an instrument that measures the teaching effectiveness of student/supervised teachers. Applied for both formative and summative purposes, it reveals, on a consistent basis, the strength and impact of LIU Hudson’s student/supervised teachers in the classroom. Scores range from 4, “highly competent,” to 3, “competent,” to 2, “minimally competent,” to 1, “not competent.” The instrument utilizes 37 items divided among 9 rating categories, which probe, among others, organization/planning, use of technology, methods of instruction, etc. The average summative score across all categories for student/supervised teachers in AY 2016-2017 was 3.7 of a possible 4.0.
In response to a survey designed to elicit responses to specific questions relating to their experiences in the LIU Hudson teacher preparation program, 32 of 35 completers of Initial certification programs responded. Using a 5 point Likert Scale (5=Excellent; 4=Very Good; 3=Good; 2=Fair; 1=Poor), program completers were asked to “rate how effectively you believe the program has prepared you” in each of twelve areas. Probes ranged from the ability to use data to improve teaching and learning, to communicating with parents, classroom management, lesson planning, etc.
Degree completer ratings were “good or better” 90-100% for all items with four items (classroom management, knowledge of content, collaborating with other professionals, and teaching methods) receiving scores of 100%; five items (communicating with students, lesson implementation, differentiating instruction, using data to improve teaching and learning and assessment of student learning) received scores of 97%, two items (lesson planning and responding to multicultural issues and needs) received scores of 91% and the final item (communicating with parents) received a score of 90%.
Perhaps equally telling are such comments as:
