Financial Aid Basics

We are pleased to be able to guide you through the process of applying for financial aid. This section of the web site is designed to answer your many questions: What application forms are required? Am I eligible for scholarships? How can I secure a student loan? At LIU Riverhead, we believe higher education should be available to everyone. We are here to guide you through the entire process to ensure your peace of mind.

In addition to speaking with a counselor, you also can use the links in this section to assist you in the college planning process. You will find details on the different types of scholarships, grants and loans available from LIU Riverhead, New York State, and the federal government as well as information on procedures, payment plans and application deadlines. You can refer to our handy glossary to gain a better understanding of commonly used financial aid terms.

Financial aid is available for students pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Click on How to Apply in the left-hand navigation to access the FAFSA or TAP forms required to apply for all forms of financial aid.

Student loan default rates

“During the tracking period for the FY 2014 borrower cohort (Oct. 1, 2013 to Sept. 30, 2016), more than five million borrowers entered repayment, and 580,671 of them—or 11.5 percent—defaulted on their loans. Those borrowers attended 6,173 postsecondary institutions across the nation. “1 Long Island University’s graduate student default rate for the same period is 7.4 percent.
