Description

Maureen Nappi is an artist, scholar and activist who specializes in the integration of the theory and practice of arts + technology, and media + feminism. In 2011, she spoke at the United Nations’ 55th Commission on the Status of Women and presented her paper “Women + Media: From Objects to Subjective Agents + Collective Activists” on the panel Engendering Technologies. As a member of VFA (Veteran Feminists of America), she was awarded a “Keeper of the Flame Award” by the National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, NY. Dr. Nappi’s artwork is particularly concerned with activism and humanistic issues including the relationship between technology and humanity, the introspective role of spiritualism as an activist motivator, feminism and racial equality. Her work has been widely exhibited in such venues as: MoMA, NY; The New York Digital Salons; The Franklin Institute of Science Museum, Philadelphia, PA; Art Futura-Virtual Reality, Barcelona, Spain; The Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, Hiroshima, Japan; IMAGINA, Monte-Carlo, Monaco; The IBM Gallery of Science and Art, NY; The Bronx Museum of the Arts; the London Film Festival; as well as numerous ACM SIGGRAPH Exhibitions. As an AAUW Doctoral Fellow, Nappi received her Ph.D. on the aesthetics of computer arts. Her dissertation entitled Language, Memory and Volition: Toward an Aesthetics of Computer Arts constructs an aesthetic framework for computer artwork based on the most fundamental operational components of the computer, which reveal the primacy of process and the integration of cognitive processes aligned with various artistic skill sets.p>
