Description

Bernard Schweizer grew up in Switzerland. He was a health care professional until he began his university studies at age 26. Dr. Schweizer attended the French-speaking University of Lausanne for two years before immigrating to the United States to continue studying at the University of Minnesota (B.A., 1992) and at Duke University (Ph.D., 1997). He returned with his family to Switzerland and taught at the University of Zurich from 1996-2000.

In 1999, Dr. Schweizer was awarded a two-year fellowship by the Swiss National Science Foundation to do research on the British author Rebecca West. This work was completed in 2002 and led to the publication of a monograph on West as well as to the publication of a volume of West’s previously unpublished manuscripts titled “Survivors in Mexico.”

Dr. Schweizer joined Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus in 2002 and received tenure there in 2007. In 2003, he founded the International Rebecca West Society and organized the first three biennial Rebecca West conferences in 2003, 2005 and 2007 in New York. He is the current president of the Rebecca West Society.
