Description

Dr. Nadarajah Vasanthan is a Professor and Chair of Chemistry Department at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus. He received his B.Sc. (Hon) in chemistry from the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka in 1986 and his MA and Ph.D. in chemistry from the City University of New York in 1993. Dr. Vasanthan completed his post-doctoral training at North Carolina State University (1993-1995) with Professor Alan Tonelli in the area of fiber and polymer science. Prior to joining with Long Island University in 2004, he worked as a senior scientist at AlliedSignal and TRI/Princeton from 1995 to 2004. Dr. Vasanthan teaches undergraduate courses in general and physical chemistry and graduate courses in inorganic and polymer chemistry. He supervised about 25 graduate students during his tenure at Long Island University. Dr. Vasanthan specializes in physical chemistry of polymers, polymer physics and spectroscopy of polymers. The primary research activities in his group focus on (1) structure development of polymer films and fibers; (2) formation and characterization of polymer nanocomposites; (3) inclusion compounds; (4) antimicrobial polymers and (5) effect of microstructure on degradation of biodegradable polymers. Professor Vasanthan is a member of several professional organizations including the American Chemical Society, Fiber Society and New York Academy of Science. He has published about 80 research papers in journals such as Macromolecules, ACS-Omega, Journal of Physical Chemistry, Journal of Polymer Science, Polymer Physics and Polymer. His research has been cited over 1500 times. He has also received several grants for his research activities at Long Island University.
