By enrolling in the 36-credit M.S. in Human Resource Management, you chose a course of study that will enable you to pursue a meaningful career in a profession that is relevant, exciting, rewarding and fulfilling.
The degree is designed to prepare students to enter the profession at the generalist level by providing a broad overview of the functional areas of human resource management (HRM). The program stresses the integration of the functional areas of HRM within the broader context of the organization and its mission, goals and values.
The degree program consists of four areas of study (foundational courses, advanced core courses, elective courses, and the HRM capstone). Foundational courses focus on general business topics and organizational competencies. Depending upon the student’s undergraduate studies and prior professional experience, foundational courses may include General Management and Leadership, Communication, Information Systems, Organizational Behavior, Management in a Global Society and the Legal Environment of HRM. Advanced coursework includes HRM and Labor Relations, as well as a Case Studies in HRM course that is designed to provide the student with the opportunity to apply what they have learned. Elective coursework includes studies that focus on developing competencies in the functional areas of HRM. These areas include, but are not limited to, HR Strategy and Policy, Training and development, Benefits, Organizational Development, Workplace Safety and Heath, Workplace Security, and Cultural Diversity. The program of study concludes with your participation and completion of the HR Capstone Seminar.
You may, like many of our students, have completed your undergraduate education years ago and are wondering whether you can get back into a learning mode. If you are a recent undergraduate, you may worry about whether this is the right degree for you, or what types of career opportunities this program of study might offer. We understand all of these uncertainties and fears and we strive to address them while you are a student.
In the Human Resource Management program, you will join a diverse group of students from different countries, different backgrounds and different walks of life. Most faculty members hold doctoral degrees in their respective fields; many bring their practical experience from both private and public sector positions to the classroom. The goal for all of us is to make your graduate education the best it can be, and to send you off confidently as an HR practitioner.
Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Approved Program
Long Island University announced that the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has acknowledged that its Master of Science in Human Resources is renewed for alignment with SHRM's HR Curriculum Guidebook and Templates. Throughout the world, 321 programs in 242 educational institutions have been acknowledged by SHRM as being in alignment with its suggested guides and templates. The HR Curriculum Guidebook and Templates were developed by SHRM to define the minimum HR content areas that should be studied by HR students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The guidelines - created in 2006 and revalidated in 2010 and 2013 - are part of SHRM’s Academic Initiative to define HR education standards taught in university business schools and help universities develop degree programs that follow these standards.
