New Student Orientation


Whether you are a first-year, transfer or graduate student, New Student Orientation serves as the introduction to the Long Island University campus and community. The program will give you an overview of the opportunities and resources available to you as a student at LIU.

Your Orientation Leaders will serve as your main point of contact throughout the program. These friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic upperclassmen will help provide each new student with the ultimate orientation experience. Along with our Orientation Leaders, LIU Promise, our Faculty and staff will be able to ensure all your questions are answered.

First-Year Orientation 

September 2-3, 2023 | Check-in begins at 9:30 a.m.

First-year orientation is designed to prepare you for a successful transition to college. During orientation, you will engage in social, educational, and interactive sessions with faculty, staff, and peers. Don't miss out on a fun and memorable welcome to Shark Nation!

Registration for Fall 2023 Orientation begins in March 2023!


Transfer & Graduate Orientation 

September 5, 2023 | Check-in begins at 10:30 a.m.

This program is open to all new incoming Transfer and Graduate Students at Long Island University. This program includes informational and interactive sessions with faculty, staff, and peers. Don't miss out on a memorable welcome to Shark Nation!


Winter Orientation 

January 16, 2023 | Check-in begins at 9 a.m.

This is a one-day program and is open to all incoming first-year, transfer, and graduate students.

What is the purpose of New Student Orientation?

There are several goals for the Orientation Program.

  • Welcome students and families to the LIU community.
  • Familiarize students with the campus, faculty, and staff, and resources available to all them.
  • Educate new students on academic requirements, community expectations, involvement opportunities, financial aid, campus safety, and residential life.
  • Encourage you to become comfortable starting at LIU and meet new classmates and peers.
What will I do at New Student Orientation?
  • Meet your Orientation Leaders, LIU Promise Staff, and your Success Coach.
  • Become acquainted with the campus and your new classmates.
  • Discover more about the departments and services available during your academic career.
  • Meet and network with distinguished members of the faculty.
  • Participate in campus life events and activities.
  • Participate in educational sessions.
  • Obtain your Student ID.
  • Meet student organizations, athletics, and Greek Life.
  • Get all your questions answered!
Do I stay overnight during Orientation?

First-year resident students will reside in their assigned residence hall during Orientation. First-year commuter students do not stay overnight. Transfer and graduate Orientation is a one-day program.

What is Parent and Family Orientation?

Parent and Family Orientation is a time for parents and families to learn more about LIU Brooklyn Campus and better understand the experiences their LIU student will soon encounter. Parent and Family Orientation is strongly encouraged. Students will be participating in the New Student Orientation session simultaneously with Parent & Family Orientation. All meals for the day will be provided. Only two guests per students.

What if I am a family member who needs to stay overnight?

Any family members who wish to stay overnight will be responsible for making reservations at an off-campus accommodation.

How do I register for Orientation?

You will need to sign in and complete the Orientation Registration Form using your My LIU account. Once you complete the form and select your Orientation session, you will receive an email confirmation. It is really that simple!

What meals are provided?

All meals will be provided during Orientation.

What does Orientation cost?

Students will be provided with all meals, LIU swag, and their Student ID while at New Student Orientation. The Orientation fee will be automatically added to each new student's account. The fee for First-Year Orientation and International Orientation is $275.00 and the fee for Transfer and Graduate Orientation is $75.00. These fees are not refundable, regardless of if a student attends Orientation.
