Our partners post openings on our Handshake platform, deliver information sessions, and participate in recruitment events, on-campus interviews, workshops, and discussions. The resume search feature on Handshake enables approved employers to view the resumes of students and alumni who have opted into this feature.
The United States Department of Labor has established guidelines to help determine whether interns working for “for-profit” employers are entitled to minimum wages and overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). See https://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/whdfs71.htm.
Internships, whether for pay or for academic credit, must abide by these guidelines. We suggest that paid internships offer a salary of at least minimum wage. Students receiving academic credit for an internship must secure departmental approvals before beginning an internship. The position must also meet the requirements set by the academic departments (requirements may vary by department.)
In order to post a position on the Handshake platform, organizations are required to register and complete a full profile on the job platform that includes:
Organization website (must be a working site)
Primary Contact Name
Primary Contact job title
Primary Contact email address that is clearly linked to the organization posting the position (i.e., aligned with the company domain. Personal email domains such as Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc. are not acceptable methods of verifying linkage to the organization. Company contacts using personal email domains will not be considered for approval.)
Internship compensation must be in accordance with U.S. Department of Labor Standards.
Internship for academic credit is determined on a case-by-case basis between the student and his or her academic department.
Our staff will review your request to connect with LIU, and all above information must be included on your organization’s Handshake profile page in order to be considered an approved employer.
We will not approve the following positions on Handshake:
A position based in a private residence. These include babysitter, personal care attendant, tutor, eldercare, home health care aide, nanny, and similar positions not listed here.
A position that requires students/alumni to pay a fee
A position that requires students/alumni to make an upfront purchase of a service or products
A position based on a “pyramid” or “multi-level” networking construct that requires or encourages the recruitment of others (typically family and friends) to sell products/services
A position lacking sufficient detail in the description
A position offering only commission-based compensation
Employers offering a position that pays less than minimum wage
A position that involves construction/home repair/janitorial work
A position that involves door-to-door solicitation
