These questions and answers have been developed to respond to feedback on LIU’s COVID-19 Response for LIU employees. This is a fluid process and the answers to the questions may change as the situation evolves. We will continue to update this page as new information becomes available and new questions arise.

Yes. LIU will offer its regular selection of in-person and online courses.

All members of the campus community will be required to wear face covering at all times while on campus. As well as, practice social distancing wherever feasible.

All Employees and students are required to follow basic infection prevention protocols: maintain social distancing, wear a face covering, and practice hand hygiene as well as respiratory etiquette. Sanitizer dispensing devices have been installed at most entryways and stairway access and egress points on both campuses. Signage has been posted in all facilities to remind the campus community to follow recommended protocols. Throughout campus, cleaning and disinfection have been enhanced to ensure that public areas, offices, and residence halls are sanitized more often.

Screening is in place to monitor possible COVID-19 symptoms and to prevent the spread of infection on campus. All campus spaces have been modified to promote social distancing and health hygiene. Touchless fixtures have been installed in all buildings. Courses are being modified to enhance remote components even when taught in-person. Student Affairs has planned an array of virtual or socially distanced events to encourage safe interaction among students. Residence hall occupancies are limited to single or double rooms and dining operations have been reconfigured to allow for safe food service, delivery and consumption.

  • LIU employees will conduct daily screening through the online LIU COVID-19 Self-Check.  Supporting signage has been posted at entryways, with reminders that the Self-Check must be completed by employees daily.  
  • LIU students will conduct daily screening prior to returning to campus through the online LIU COVID-19 Self-Check.  Daily screening will continue throughout the semester each time a student enters campus.

The University began a comprehensive COVID-19 Surveillance Testing Program for all students, faculty, and staff in fall semester for the 2020-2021 academic year. In partnership with Enzo Labs, a random sampling of the University community will be selected each week to complete a COVID-19 PCR test. Community members will receive an email with their selection which will include a registration link to schedule an appointment.

All tests are administered at the On-Campus Testing Center.

Taking a COVID-19 test is easy and will not take too much time. Selected LIU community members will need to report to the Testing Center at the time of their scheduled appointment and present an LIU ID card and Insurance Card. Once the test is completed, the results will return within a few days. Results can also be viewed by setting up a Patient Portal with Enzo Labs. Confidentiality will be maintained. As a reminder, you are required to wear a face-covering at all times and practice proper social distancing while in the testing center.

Vulnerable student populations should contact the Office of the Dean of Students Office at 718-488-1573 (Brooklyn) or 516-299-2480 (Post) to discuss possible alternative arrangements. Employees who are seeking accommodations or alternative working arrangements should contact the LIU Human Resources Office at 516-299-4217.

All academic support services are available. Some services will be offered virtually and online with students and will continue to do so until it is safe to return to normal operations. A list of services can be found on the LIU Website under campus life.

LIU Libraries Services continued to offer learning support to students as they studied remotely in the spring and summer. They will continue to do so this fall in conjunction with reduced in-person services that meet social distancing guidelines in the library facilities.

Employees should contact their healthcare provider.

Students who suspect they may have COVID-19 symptoms should contact Health Services on their campus. They will be screened by health care providers over the phone and then directed to the proper facility for an appointment, if necessary.

Health Services at LIU Brooklyn are offered through The Brooklyn Hospital Center on Dekalb Avenue across from campus. Call 718-246-6450.

At LIU Post, students in need of further medical attention are referred to the Riland Health Center located adjacent to LIU Post. Call 516-299-3468.

In an emergency, call Public Safety at 516-299-2222.

***Exposed is defined as being less than six feet from a person for a period of more than 15 minutes.

If you are an employee, you must leave campus immediately and remain in quarantine for 14 days. You should follow your healthcare provider’s instruction and contact your supervisor and LIU Human Resources Office at 516-299-4217 for further information. Arrangements should be made to teach your class remotely or a substitute should be identified.

If you are a residential student who has been exposed to a positive COVID-19 case, you may choose to return home to quarantine for 14 days, or you may quarantine for 14 days in a designated residence hall on campus. If you remain on campus, Student Affairs will work with you to ensure that your basic needs are met, including food, medicine, counseling, and academic needs. Your department chair or academic dean will work with you to arrange for remote instruction while you are quarantined.

If you are a commuter student who has been exposed to a positive COVID-19 case, you must leave campus immediately and remain in quarantine for 14 days. Your department chair or academic dean will work with you to arrange for remote instruction while you are quarantined.

If you are an employee, isolate. You should follow your healthcare provider’s instruction and contact your supervisor and LIU Human Resources Office at 516-299-4217 for further information.

If you are a residential student and test positive for COVID-19, you should return home for medical care. If you cannot return home, Student Affairs will work with you to provide housing in an isolation dorm on campus and to ensure that your basic needs are met, including food, medicine, counseling, and academic needs. Your department chair or academic dean will work with you to arrange for remote instruction while you are ill.

If you are a commuter student and test positive for COVID-19, you should leave campus and seek medical care at home. Your department chair or academic dean will work with you to arrange for remote instruction while you are ill.

Everyone on campus will be required to wear a face covering in public. This rule will be enforced by the LIU Student Code of Conduct and by Human Resources policies.

For LIU Post students who test positive for COVID-19, Nassau and Suffolk County health officials will conduct contact tracing with the assistance of LIU Post staff and administrators. For LIU Brooklyn students who test positive for COVID-19, contact tracing will be conducted by the University with the assistance of county health authorities in Brooklyn.

Isolation and quarantine help protect the public by preventing exposure to people who have or may have a contagious disease.

Isolation separates sick people with a contagious disease from people who are not sick.

Quarantine separates and restricts the movement of people who were exposed to a contagious disease to see if they become sick.
