Practical Matters

Housing

  • Australia: Students live in shared beach houses in Byron Bay, with 4-8 students per house. Houses include Internet, TV, washing machine, and full kitchen. During field trips, accommodations may include hostels, guesthouses, and tents.
  • Fiji: Students stay in hostels, eco-resorts, and community-based homestays.
  • New Zealand: Students generally stay in youth hostels, Maori marae, or occasionally tents.
  • Indonesia: In Bali, students stay in family-owned homestays, hotels, or university dorms.

Living Expenses and Budget

Computer & Internet Access

Students should bring a laptop. Internet is available in most student houses, though it may be slower than in the U.S. Expect limited or slower access in rural areas and while traveling. International adapters are required for U.S. electronics, and a voltage converter may be needed for high-wattage devices.

Travel & Visa Information

  • Australia: Students need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization), which costs about $20.
  • Fiji & New Zealand: No visa required.
  • Indonesia: No visa required for Bali.

Ensure passports are valid for at least one year and have four blank pages for stamps. Non-U.S. citizens should check visa requirements for their nationality.
