Practical Matters
- Banking & Money
- Currency: In Europe, currency varies (Euro, Pound, Forint). Use XE.com for conversions.
- Credit Cards: Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted. Carry two cards (in your name) and an ATM card. Notify your bank before departure.
- Cash/ATM: ATMs are common and offer favorable exchange rates. Avoid large amounts of cash, and use a mix of methods for accessing money.
- Traveler’s Checks: Rarely used but can be a backup in emergencies.
- Western Union: Use for quick money transfers with competitive exchange rates.
- Money Tips:
- Carry at least €200 upon arrival. Use credit/ATM cards for most transactions, but always have a backup plan.
- Keep money, cards, and passport in a secure, hidden location.
- Mail
- Use e-mail or couriers (FedEx, DHL) for important items.
- Avoid shipping large packages; they can take months and incur fees.
- Mail is received at designated centers (Franklin Institute or Florence School of Fine Arts).
- Electrical Requirements
- Voltage is 220-240V; U.S. appliances may need a converter. Most electronics (e.g., laptops) have built-in converters.
- Ask before using appliances in outlets to prevent damage.
- E-mail & Internet
- Students are provided with an LIU email account and computer lab access during weekdays.
