Dr. Dovenia Ponnoth received her Ph.D. degree from West Virginia University. Her postdoctoral experience includes a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Physiology & Pharmacology at West Virginia University and prior to that, she received an ORISE fellowship with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Dr. Dovenia Ponnoth joined the Division of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the fall semester of 2014. Her research and teaching interests include Cardiovascular Pharmacology and Lung Biology. Her main research focus is in Cardiopulmonary Pharmacology and the interaction between reactive airway diseases and the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVD); asthma/COPD pathogenesis; the role of Angiotensin ll and adenosine in lung diseases and CVD. Dr. Ponnoth has presented her work at several international conferences, and serves as a reviewer for many prominent pharmacology journals.

Research Synopsis

My research focus is lung and vascular pharmacology/physiology. Throughout my research career thus far, I have developed a very strong interest in bridging pulmonary disease and vascular outcomes. Currently, my lab investigates the effects of Angiotensin ll in allergic mice from a cardiopulmonary standpoint in vascular reactivity, vascular and systemic inflammation as well as airway hyperreactivity and airway inflammation in an allergic mouse model of asthma. In studying the effects of Ang ll on inflammation and vascular changes, my research will contribute to a new, less understood area of reactive airway diseases and could potentially add a new dimension to the current knowledge of drug therapy used to manage asthma. My lab makes use of a) whole animals; b) ex vivo and in vitro experiments and c) specific receptor knock-out models to study effects of various agents in vascular/airway relaxation, inflammation and airway resistance. Some of the techniques we use include in-vitro organ bath, whole body plethysmography, airway reactivity, differential inflammatory cell analysis. In addition, we use different proteomic and genomic approaches to study expression and function of specific targets.
