Description

Dr. Choi was born and raised in South Korea. She taught moral education and history at a junior high school in South Korea before deciding to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees in the United States. In 2001, she earned a Ph.D. at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the philosophy of education. Dr. Choi teaches various courses in philosophy of education, foundations of education (undergraduate), social foundations of education (graduate) and contemporary philosophy of education (graduate). Her academic interests focus on Socrates, Rousseau, moral education, aesthetic/arts education and ethnic identity.

Dr. Choi’s scholarly work and publications continue to explore those themes. Her latest project, “Korean-American immigrant parents’ experience in urban schools,” developed in conjunction with Dr. Jeong-eun Rhee of Long Island University and New York City public school teachers, seeks to gain greater understanding of how increasingly diverse student populations may require different educational training for pre-service teachers. In 2006, Dr. Choi served as consultant with her colleagues in the School of Education on a Department of Justice-granted project to study the ways in which aesthetic education can be used to improve academic skills. From 2005-2009, Dr. Choi collaborated again with her colleagues to develop a Web site using Rembrandt’s works of art that was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

Dr. Choi is active in several academic organizations in her discipline, including the Philosophy of Education Society in the United States (PES), the Mid-Atlantic States Philosophy of Education Society (MASPES), the South Atlantic Philosophy of Education Society (SAPES), the American Educational Studies Association (AESA), the Northeastern Educational Research Association (NERA) and the American Educational Research Association (AERA). She serves as treasurer and is a member of the program proposals committee for MASPES and is also a member of the yearbook review board for SAPES. Dr. Choi regularly writes about Socratic teaching, Rousseau, ethnic identity and aesthetic/art education. Her writing has been published in leading academic journals, such as Arts Education Policy Studies and Teachers College Record.
