Description

Heting Chu is a professor in the Palmer School of Library and Information Science. She came to Long Island University in September 1994 after being an assistant professor at St. John’s University for one year. She earned a B.A. in library science from Peking University, China; a master’s degree in library and information science from McGill University, Canada; and a Ph.D. in information studies from Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pa. As she progressed in her educational pursuance, her subject orientation moved from library science in general to information retrieval in particular.

Chu’s teaching and research interests include the use of information technology in library and information science, especially in the areas of information representation and retrieval, research methods and scientific communication. Specifically, she has taught one undergraduate course, eight different master’s-level courses and five individual doctoral seminars since she became a faculty member at the Palmer School. She has authored or edited seven books since 1997, one of which, titled “Information Representation and Retrieval in the Digital Age,” has been particularly well received in the field, including being translated from English into Korean in 2005 and published in India in 2009. The second edition of this monograph was published in January 2010. In addition, she has received numerous citations and requests from people all over the world for reprints of the three-dozen articles she has published. The topics of her research papers range from digital libraries, e-books and e-journals to Web search engines, Web 2.0 applications and scholarly communication.

Chu’s services to the university and the field are offered at the local, national and international levels. At Long Island University, she has served on eight campus-wide committees and six school-based committees, including serving as chair for the Personnel Committee and playing a leadership role in the revival of the ASIS&T (American Society for Information Science & Technology) student chapter in 1994. Chu also regularly reviews submissions to six journals (e.g., Library & Information Science Research, the Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, and the Journal of Information Science) as well as two book publishers (i.e., Kluwer Academic Publishers, Sage Publications) in addition to serving on the editorial board of several serial publications.
