Description

Marla Waterman, lyric soprano, is an active performer in concerts as soloist and recitalist of chamber music, art songs, sacred music, and contemporary music in the United States and Great Britain. She began her teaching career on the voice faculty of Southern Illinois University where she gave solo recitals, performed in local opera productions, and participated in chamber works.

After several years of teaching on the LIU Post music faculty, she was fortunate to have the opportunity to spend a year in residency in England at the University of Keele where she founded an opera workshop, appeared as soloist in the Verdi Requiem and Faure Requiem for BBC Radio Three with members of the English National Opera, sang a command performance for HRH Princess Margaret, and performed in chamber recitals at historic English houses.

During her tenure at LIU Post, Professor Waterman has taught studio voice to graduates and undergraduates for many years as well as teaching courses in music history and theory. In addition to being an enthusiastic member of the LIU Post faculty, Prof. Waterman also serves as head of the Early Childhood music program at the Green Vale School where she teaches classroom music, writes children's songs, and serves as music director/composer/accompanist for children's plays.

Locally, Prof. Waterman is soprano soloist and section leader with the Christ Church choir and, earlier, was at the Presbyterian Church, Oyster Bay. In the past, she served as member and soloist with the Belle Voci Intergenerational Women's Choir and frequent guest artist on the American Music Concert Series at the Third Street Music Settlement School in New York City. Recently, Prof. Waterman was soprano soloist with the East Hampton Choral Society in a program of Brahms choral works, sang at the reopening of Sagamore Hill historic site, participated as soloist in "Hail, Gladdening Light!," a festival of sacred music for multiple choirs and orchestra, and this spring sang the Fauré Requiem, and Schubert Mass in G.

In the words of Dr. Karl Paulnack, "Music is a basic need of human survival. Music is one of the ways we make sense of our lives, one of the ways in which we express feelings when we have no words, a way for us to understand things with our hearts when we can't with our minds." Prof. Waterman looks forward to more years of experiencing the joy of teaching and making music!
