Just steps away from Northern Boulevard, Steinberg Museum of Art features newly renovated galleries, a visible storage suite, and exciting exhibitions and programming.
The mission of Steinberg Museum of Art is to consistently provide an environment that encourages exploration of the visual arts. A year-round schedule of temporary exhibitions covers topics from antiquity to the cutting edge of contemporary art. Opening receptions, lectures, music performances, and other events enhance the exhibitions and scholarship at the Museum. In these ways, the Museum supports the academic mission of LIU.
In 2017 LIU completed a major renovation to the Museum. One of the unique features of the space is a visible storage suite that gives students, faculty, staff, and scholars unprecedented access to more than 4,000 objects from the Permanent Collection.
Across 45 years, the Museum has developed a Collection that is diverse and comprised of objects that support the mission of both a liberal arts university and a college of the arts. African sculpture and textiles, Chinese painting and sculpture, and Contemporary Art form the majority of the Collection. Additionally, a major component of the Collection is Pre-Columbian Art. These works in textile, ceramic, feather, stone, and wood are unrivaled in museum collections on Long Island.
As students develop their intellectual lives at LIU, they can be sure that the Museum will offer new experiences to meet their interests. Across these four years we build lifelong learners and ignite curiosity
Permanent Collection
On October 18, 2018 the Museum inaugurated its 900 square foot Visible Storage Suite where guests may view the Collection. One of the unique features of the space, two glass enclosures, provides students, faculty, staff, scholars – and curious members of our community – unprecedented access to more than 4,000 objects from the Permanent Collection. Join us during regular museum hours to use the Visible Storage Suite.

Early Childhood Program
Artistic Explorers
This 1-hour, developmentally appropriate program is designed to introduce young children (K -2nd grade) to the Museum while building both visual and verbal literacy skills. Children will participate in stories and creative activities surrounding a range of artwork, and will experiment with artistic materials as they practice looking, listening and describing.
NOTE: Group size must be limited to 20 students.
Programs for 3rd-12th grade
These 2-hour experiences incorporate age-appropriate discussion, Museum activities, and a hands-on art project. Educators may schedule a tour based on our current exhibitions or may contact the Museum Educator at (516) 299-2782 to structure a customized visit utilizing objects from our collection. Prior to the visit, participating educators receive a Curriculum Resource Guide with information, reproducible handouts, and lesson plans.
Reserve a Visit
The fee for each program is $110 per class. Reservations for visits may be made by calling 516.299.2782. Reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Payment is due 2 weeks prior to the day of your visit.
Because of space limitations, class size is limited to 30 students.

NYS learning standards
Museum programs are designed to be interdisciplinary in nature, but are founded in the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts in the Visual Arts discipline. A museum visit provides a starting point for further examination of concepts encompassing math, science, social studies and language arts in the classroom. Our Curriculum Resource Guides, provided to each visiting group, emphasize learning across the curriculum through the visual arts.
