Is Long Island University Lewyt College of Veterinary accredited?
• Accreditation is granted by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council of Education (AVMA COE). Long Island University Lewyt College of Veterinary was granted a Letter of Reasonable Assurance on October 16th, 2019, and Provisional Accreditation status on April 14th, 2020. AVMA COE accreditation also includes accreditation by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association.

What is a distributed model of veterinary education?
• Long Island University Lewyt College of Veterinary is joining a growing number of institutions that provide clinical training through immersion in real-world community-based clinical practices. During the first three semesters, students will begin observational visits to affiliate practices and the clinical experience will culminate in full-time engagement within practices carefully chosen to provide a balance between specialty practice and primary veterinary care. What is the class size?

Admissions Requirements


Do I meet the eligibility requirements?

• Prospective students are evaluated on previous academic performance, experience with animals, and knowledge of the profession. A complete list of admission requirements can be found on the Long Island University Lewyt College of Veterinary website.

Is a bachelor’s degree required to apply to Long Island University Lewyt College of Veterinary Medicine?
• A bachelor’s degree or equivalent is not required. However, applicants must have completed a minimum of 60 credits that include the pre-requisites.

What are the prerequisite course requirements?
• All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better. The prerequisite courses must be taken within the previous 6 years, except for Statistics or Calculus, and English Composition.
• Exceptions to the 6-year currency rule may be granted for applicants with existing degrees in the medical profession (MD, DO, PA) who continue to practice in the medical field since earning their degree.
• Applicants may have up to two prerequisite courses still in progress at the time of application.

Are AP/IB credits accepted?
• AP credit(s) must appear on an official transcript and be equivalent to appropriate college-level coursework.

Are international transcripts accepted?
• Yes. International transcripts must be evaluated by World Education Services (WES) and submitted to VMCAS. It is recommended that transcripts be submitted to WES at least one month prior to the VMCAS deadline.

Is the GRE required?
• GRE is no longer required.
• While the GRE is not required, you have the option to submit your scores to be considered in the application process (GRE General Test, provided by ETS). Applicants with both a lower-than-average overall undergraduate GPA and higher-than-average pre-requisite GPA stand to benefit the most from submitting their GRE scores.

How do I apply?

• All applications must be submitted through the Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS).

When is the deadline for applications?
• The VMCAS application portal will open on January 21, 2026, when applicants may begin completing sections Q1–3 at https://vmcas.liaisoncas.com/.
• Beginning May 6, 2026, applicants may pay the application fees and submit their applications to programs.
• The final submission deadline is September 15, 2026.

What is the application fee?
• VMCAS application fees and fee waiver information for the 2026–2027 cycle will be available on the VMCAS Help Center in early January 2026.


Does Long Island University Lewyt College of Veterinary require a supplemental application?

• No.

Will I be notified if my application is incomplete?
• No, we do not notify applicants about incomplete applications. Only applications marked as “verified” by VMCAS will be reviewed. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all information is entered correctly, and all required materials, including official transcripts, are sent directly to VMCAS before the deadline.
• Each applicant must also complete the Casper® situational judgment test. Testing sessions are limited each year, so we strongly recommend that the applicant schedule their test as early as possible. The Casper® deadline is the same as the VMCAS admission cycle deadline.

Interviews and Decisions


Is an interview required for admission?

• Yes, Long Island University Lewyt College of Veterinary will conduct multiple mini-interviews (MMIs). Applicants will be ranked and the top candidates invited for an online video interview with LCVM Faculty. MMIs are held between December and January.

When will I be notified if I am accepted?
• Offer letters are sent out on a rolling basis beginning in February.

Does the Admissions Committee place applicants on a waitlist?
• Yes. The wait list will be active until all seats are filled; note that this could be as late as a few days into the start of the program (end of August).

What do I need to do if accepted?
• If you receive an offer before April, you will need to accept the offer by the middle of April (exact date will be posted in the offer letter). If you receive an offer after mid-April, you will be given a time-limited period to accept the offer. An offer is accepted when you register online with LIU (instructions will be provided) and secured with a deposit — the deposit amount is $500, which will go towards your tuition fees at the start of the program.

Can I transfer to Long Island University Lewyt College of Veterinary Medicine?
• Transfer students can be accepted. Because the program has some unique curricular features, it will not be possible for students from all programs to easily transfer to an equivalent semester. These transfers need to be considered on an individual basis. There needs to be an open seat in the class and accepted students can transfer to semesters 2–5 only, provided there is 100% alignment between the curriculum at the school of origin and the Lewyt College of Veterinary Medicine.
• Applicants in good standing with a minimum overall GPA of 3.2 at the school of origin are eligible to transfer on a space-available basis.
• Students who have been dismissed from another AVMA-accredited veterinary school for academic or non-academic reasons are not eligible to transfer to LIU-LCVM.

Tuition and Financial Aid


How much will it cost to attend Long Island University Lewyt College of Veterinary?

• The cost-of-attendance budget represents the estimated total cost to attend the Long Island University Lewyt College of Veterinary Medicine for one academic year. Personal travel, travel to affiliated clinics and other miscellaneous expenses are variable and will depend on individual selection of clinical clerkships. Core Small Animal Medicine, Small Animal Surgery, Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine/Critical Care rotations will be conducted at affiliates within a 40-mile radius from campus or the student’s home in the case of those residing in neighboring states (New Jersey, Connecticut).
