Innovations in Veterinary Medical Education

Long Island University College of Veterinary Medicine faculty pursue research that promotes excellence in teaching innovation and scholarship. Research on novel teaching methods focus on assessment tool validation, development of new learning resources to support different learning styles, and evaluation of teaching technology effectiveness in the acquisition of required professional competencies by Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students. Faculty whose research focus is in the area of Medical Education include Drs. Carmen Fuentealba, Oscar Illanes, and Karen Inzana.

Research areas in Veterinary Medical Education include:
  • Early immersion effectiveness on development of competency in the various facets of veterinary practice
  • Impact of deliberate practice on early clinical competency acquisition
  • Clinical veterinary education distributive model advantages/disadvantages
  • Exposure to a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine research-rich learning environment
  • Use of low/high fidelity simulations and gaming technologies to supplement the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine learning environment

A Virtual Pathology Rounds iBook, which includes clinical information, gross and microscopic findings from autopsy cases seen at off-campus clinical sites and partner shelters, supplements the integration of pathology across the curriculum. Each case includes a thorough review of the pertinent scientific literature performed by Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students, emphasizing the importance of an evidence-based approach to the diagnosis and management of diseases observed in veterinary practice. A scholarly approach to the diagnostic case load provide faculty opportunities to publish in peer-reviewed journals in collaboration with off-campus clinicians.
