Dr. Isadora Lima graduated as a veterinary surgeon in 2011, from Universidade Federal da Bahia – Brazil, and have been working with veterinary pathology and visceral leishmaniasis since graduation. She worked with splenic white pulp disruption and its effects on the severity of visceral leishmaniasis during her MSc in pathology obtained from FIOCRUZ in 2013. As a doctoral researcher, she studied the histological changes observed in the liver of dogs with visceral leishmaniasis and the clinical correlations of these changes. Dr. Lima also focused on the granulomatous response in the liver, and its role in parasite control and clinical status.
As a post-doctoral researcher, she was involved in a project that aimed to further understand the granulomatous response in dogs and other species, such as non-human primates, to provide background information increasing understanding of the human disease. Dr. Lima is also evaluating tools that can be used to modulate the immune response to control parasite growth and help the immune system to control the infection, improving the clinical status of naturally infected dogs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Lima was involved in a project that performed minimally invasive necropsies on corpses of people who died due to COVID-19.
From 2021 to 2024, Dr. Lima developed a post-doctoral project in which she tested a new drug for the treatment of canine visceral leishmaniasis. This project was developed in collaboration with a pharmaceutical company in Europe.
Dr. Lima is currently involved in a project testing a vaccine candidate for visceral leishmaniasis in collaboration with Dr. Abhay Satoskar, from The Ohio State University.
