The LIU College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) has a robust and progressive research program that is supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the United States Department of Agriculture-National Institute of Food and Agriculture, and other extramural sources. The primary areas of research focus by the faculty include Infectious Diseases, Comparative Medicine & Therapeutics, and Veterinary Medical Education. Research faculty have access to core equipment at LIU CVM and at neighboring institutions, such as Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories and Stony Brook University. A robust graduate program is being developed to train the next generation of veterinarians and scientists.

CVM faculty are supported by the University’s Office for Research Administration, the Office of Sponsored Projects, and the College’s Office of Research. Compliance oversight is provided by the University Institutional Review Board (IRB), the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), the Office of Research Integrity (ORI), and Conflict of Interest training.

Experts skilled at research intelligence and proposal development have the ability to identify and connect faculty with current and future funding opportunities, and whom possess experience securing partnerships that effectively mobilize the research teams needed to secure large grants.
- Academic and Research Excellence
A comprehensive approach to both academic and research excellence is available to enable interested veterinary students the opportunity to engage in research. In addition, LIU faculty apply their innovative research to their classes, providing students with the latest information and how it is obtained. The CVM Administration ensure that research experiences and practicums are readily available to students, and are embedded into the curriculum.
- LIU and Research Opportunities Integrated into the DVM Curriculum
DVM students have opportunities to be involved in CVM research activities, particularly during summer months. Those students who are actively engaged in a research project that results in a publication on which they are an author will be recognized for their contribution to scholarly achievement. In addition, how research has advanced the veterinary profession will be integrated and emphasized throughout the DVM curriculum. The LIU-CVM Research Office infrastructure goals support faculty-student research, and an overall mission to create LIU-CVM programs that support a dual, interconnected “research - academics ecosystem.”
Research emphasis areas interface with existing LIU strengths, including Pharmaceutical Sciences, Precision Medicine, Public Health, and Business & Entrepreneurship. CVM faculty are strategically clustered into research teams to promote interdisciplinary research between cluster areas, existing LIU faculty, and strategic external partners. Additional support faculty and staff include pathologists, postdoctoral fellows, technicians, graduate students, and undergraduates who will support cluster research activity.
