Oscar Illanes, DVM, PhD, DACVP

Dr. Illanes holds a DVM degree (MV) from the Universidad Austral de Chile, a PhD degree in the area of neuroanatomy and neuropathology from the University of Liverpool, England, and completed a veterinary pathology residency program (specialty training) at Texas A&M University. Dr. Illanes is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) and has considerable teaching and diagnostic experience. His academic background includes 4 years as Assistant Professor of Veterinary Anatomy and Pathology at his Alma matter, and 23 years as a faculty pathologist in accredit Veterinary Colleges in Canada (Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island; University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine), and in the States (College of Veterinary Medicine, Western University of Health Sciences; Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine). In addition to his teaching, scholarly and diagnostic duties Dr. Illanes has been actively involved in specialty training (pathology interns/ residents/ graduate students) at its former institutions. His professional experience also includes 4 years as a toxicologic pathologist in the pharmaceutical industry (Department of Drug Safety Evaluation, Pfizer Global Research and Development, Pfizer Inc., La Jolla, California) where he participated in the pre-clinical evaluation of chemical compounds for the Oncology and Type II diabetes therapeutic areas. In 2007 Dr. Illanes returned to Canada and served as a tenured professor of pathology and chief of diagnostic services at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Calgary (UCVM). In 2011 he took a position as professor of anatomic pathology at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine where he remained until joining Long Island University in January 2019.

Dr. Illanes’ academic interests include collaborative research in natural and experimental disease, diagnostic pathology, neuropathology, medical education technology, internship/residency training and mentorship programs.
