Athens, Greece – Architecture of Influence

Dates: May 18 – 27, 2025

Greece

Course Title: GEUR 398 - The Architecture of Influence from Ancient Greece to Modern America

Course Description: This course explores architecture's role in symbolizing and establishing power, leadership, and identity across civilizations. Focusing on both ancient Greek architecture and its significant influence on American design, students will examine how monumental structures reflect political, cultural, and social dominance. Through weekly virtual sessions during the spring semester, we will compare key elements of ancient Greek architecture—such as temples, theaters, and public spaces—with the Greek Revival style that shaped early American architecture. We will investigate how both nations used architecture to assert authority and influence in their respective eras. The course culminates in a study abroad experience in Greece, where students will have the opportunity to visit and analyze iconic sites such as the Acropolis, Delphi, and other monumental structures, engaging directly with the architectural grandeur that shaped Western civilization. This hands-on exploration will provide invaluable insights into how ancient architectural principles continue to resonate in modern design.

Credits: 3 advanced liberal arts credits. All summer study abroad courses also count as Honors College credits (for those in the Honors College).

Instructor: Dr. Gregory W. Barton
